Overview

Mr. Hershey was the responsible design professional for the improvements to the Shippensburg Borough Authority’s existing Well No. 1 site. The existing site included a 100-horsepower vertical turbine well pump and motor capable of 890 gpm peak demand, chlorine gas for disinfection, fluorosilicic acid (fluoride) feed and centrifugal booster pumps. Improvements to the site were last completed in 1994.

Mr. Hershey was responsible for hydraulic modeling; pump sizing; site piping improvements; electrical and HVAC design; DEP Public Water Supply Permitting Major Amendment; and erosion and sedimentation control. The improvements were complete and the well operational in summer 2012. The project was showcased at the WWOAP and AWWA Joint Meeting and Continuing Education Program in Spring 2013. The all-day event included presentations on the design of the facility and an afternoon tour.

Highlights of the project include:
  • Upgrade of the existing vertical turbine well pump for higher head conditions
  • New electrical and control systems
  • Building expansion to house new booster pumps and pressure reducing valves
  • Replacement of the existing chlorine gas feed system with onsite sodium hypochlorite generation system
  • Fluoride room upgrades
  • Installation of a new generator
